Ancient Roman History of Lupercalia.
It all started with the ancient Romans, who held a fertility festival each year called Lupercalia during February. They believed that Romulus and Remus, the offspring of Mars, the God of War, were nurturing their wolf-mother on this day. To honor beings’ reproductive powers and boost fertility rates, ancient Romans sacrificed goats or dogs and smeared the blood on couples in attendance. Although it wasn’t romantic by today’s standards, some believe that this event is where Valentine’s Day was born.
The Martyrdom of St Valentine.
According to legend, it was during February that St Valentine was martyred for marrying Christian couples in spite of a Roman Empire edict against it. When a young couple discovered his whereabouts and asked for help, St Valentine agreed – and he was caught and sentenced to death. Centuries later, Pope Gelasius I adopted this story as the reason behind Valentine’s Day as we know it today.
By the 18th century, Valentine’s cards started to become popular in England and began appearing on the shelves of stationers. The earliest known were handmade paper cutouts with delicate designs and sweet verses attached to them. People could also send messages and tokens of love without paying anything or leaving their homes, as merchants especially throughout London used to visit households to deliver these gifts.
Development of Modern Commercialized Loyalty Holidays in Earliest 20th Century America.
In the earliest part of the 20th century, after Valentine’s Day became popular throughout Europe and North America, printers and publishers capitalized on the holiday’s success. They started to mass-produce Valentine’s cards, which become immensely popular. Mass production and transportability meant that people could send multiple cards on February 14th to express their love. This commercialization transformed Valentine’s Day from a day of sentimentality and affection into an established tradition celebrated by millions of people each year.
